When I was in my mid thirties, I was working on a story with a scene in it that involved a tarot card reading. I wanted the scene to ring true to anyone who was knowledgeable about tarot card readings. For research purposes I purchased a deck of tarot cards, along with some books about them. As I laid out readings to get a feel of what a tarot card reader would see and do I discovered that I had a gift for reading the cards. Through further research of the tarot cards, I discovered Wicca. The more I studied about Wicca and other pagan nature based religions, the more I felt pulled towards them.
I have always had certain "gifts". But like many with those "gifts" had been taught to fear them. But as I continued to study Wicca, and magick in general, the more I felt as if I was coming home. Over the years, I have gotten deeper and deeper into all things magickal and mystical. I have learned to embrace the witch within me. And now that I'm in my 50's, I'm embracing the crone side of me as well.
My house, and even my yard reflects my belief in, and love of magickal mystical things. Ceramic faeries abound in my recently remodeled coral shores colored porch room. Tucked away in the corner of that room, on a lovely brass corner shelf unit is my crystal ball, as well as some little totems carved from various crystals. This room is a place I spend a lot of time in. Especially now that I have a little portable a/c unit to cool it off on hot summer days, and a little faux cast iron electric fireplace to keep it warm in the winter. It was while sitting out in the porch room one evening and watching looking at the faeries that sit atop the faux cast iron stove that the idea for Pretty Prisons came to me.
In my backyard I have an oasis/sacred circle/medicine wheel I built one summer that is a peaceful place to relax during late afternoons. And a wonderful place to perform rituals and celebrations in. The oasis/sacred circle/medicine wheel was carefully laid out when it was built. A small pond with a miniature waterfall resides in the west, wind chimes in east, pepper plants in south, and extra stones and earth totems in it. When weather permits, I love celebrating full moons in this sacred spot that despite it doubling as a general oasis, never loses it tranquil magick.
Whether one believes in magick or not, I think we all need some kind of special place within our homes, and within ourselves where we can go to relax and recharge. I very fortunate to have two such places here at my home, and never forget to thank the Powers That I Believe In for those places when I am celebrating, or even just relaxing in them. Having them, helps me to maintain that special place within myself.
